Andy McLynn

Andy has lived in Brighton since 1992 and studied illustration at Brighton University. After graduating he won several commissions, including two books for Hodder Headline and editorial work for national press.

“I have always had an interest in country landscapes but find the shapes and surfaces of towns and cities even more interesting. The details and the structure of the buildings have increased meaning to me as they are the backdrop to my daily life.”

Familiarity with his subject matter allows Andy to take liberties with it, and to focus on the composition of the image.  His work starts with a thumbnail sketch of a layout, working from memory. He then returns to the subject and draws upon it using the detail to provide the texture and pattern. Such recognizable elements as windows, facades, outline of roofs against the sky enable him to build up a graphic construction that is dense and complex without being overpowering.
