JOANNA CHARLOTTE
“From a young age art was something very special to me. Some of my most vivid memories of childhood and school are of painting, drawing and creating.”
Joanna studied art at college and was very inspired by the Old Masters and their traditional style of painting. She struggled to find a suitable degree course focussing on painting, and the fine arts and so her painting was put on the back burner for a while. It wasn’t until nearly ten years later in 2004 that she picked up her brushes again, and began to paint. Over this time Joanna has developed her methods and practices. Using oils she builds up her paintings in a series of fine glazes and layers - creating tone and form to create a fine finish.
Joanna takes inspiration from artists such as Stubbs, Sargent, Whistler, Caravaggio, Monet and Klimt. She can often be found wandering the halls of The National Gallery observing the intricacies of the many famed painted surfaces, trying to dissect the technique of the artist.
Joanna was born in Gloucester in 1977, the youngest of three girls. She grew up and was educated in Surrey and at the age of 18 moved to South-East London where she is now based.
