SAM HEWITT
Sam began showing his oil paintings in 1999, experimenting with light, colour and form within urban landscapes.
"In painting street scenes I want to show light and the beauty and purpose of the people it collides with. This sits well in opposition to the feelings of isolation and distrust that we often carry around town."
Sam Hewitt studied Visual Art and Music at Brighton University in the early 90s, but evening classes in figure drawing from former Goldsmiths lecturer Sam Rabin in the early 80s shaped his approach to the human form.
Between 1998 and 2005 he travelled the world and published three albums as a member of the band Clearlake. He is a founder member of The Fortune Cats Art collective which has produced a developing series of acclaimed indoor and outdoor installations and performances internationally since 2007. This work is also about examining individual consciousness within crowd behaviour and there are growing parallels with the oil paintings.
Sam's work can now be found in galleries and collections across Europe including a recent commission of three paintings for the prestigious Hiscox collection.
"What a wonderful thing painting is: personal notation of a series of conscious and unconscious choices, up on the wall for all to see."
