SHYAMA RUFFELL

Coming from a family of professional artists, Shyama grew up in the world of fine art, first exhibiting her work in London at the age of seven.

“I remember being entranced by the pigments and palettes of colour at my exact eye level as I stood at the table in my fathers studio watching him mixing colours.”

Shyama describes her recent work as “A cocktail of William Morris, Mackintosh and Rousseau in an English meadow, with a splash of Klimt and a squeeze of Jungle book.”

Her latest work is an extension of her continuing studies of natural forms. Especially interested in wild flowers and hedgerows she explores unrefined fragments of land. Using multiple layers of coloured paint, texture and pencil, she creates highly patterned almost naive, semi abstract images.

Evoking memories of warm, relaxed, playful days in the wild meadows of the Sussex countryside where she grew up.

“I am fascinated by light peeping through tangled flowers, grasses and seedpods. From cultivated bunches of flowers to wild tangled hedgerows - wind blown, tousled and untamed. I love how random patterns are created in verges and roundabouts and can occasionally be found crawling around in them with my camera whilst the traffic speeds past unaware.”

Often painting to commission regularly exhibiting and publishing , Shyama lives in Brighton. She works from her home studio which over looks the garden.
