Shyama Ruffell

“My recent work is an extension of my continuing studies of natural forms. From cultivated bunches of flowers to wild tangled hedgerows, wind blown, tousled and untamed. I love the colours and textures that come from these unrefined fragments of land. But it’s also the light peeping through the tangled flowers, grasses and seedpods, creating random patterns that I find fascinating. Evoking memories of warm days as a child in the countryside, lying in the grass, playing in the woods and wild meadows. I see it now in unspoiled hedges and roundabouts and have been known to be seen crawling around in them with my camera whilst the traffic speeds past.”

Coming from a family of artists, Shyama grew up in the world of fine art, first exhibiting her work at the age of seven on Bayswater Road.

“I remember being entranced by the pigments and palettes of colour at my eye level as I stood in my father’s studio watching him work at mixing colours.”

Shyama studied textiles and extensive travel further influenced her work. In addition to working for a wide range of creative companies in various disciplines she maintains a strong focus on her personal work as an artist, often painting to commission and regularly exhibiting and publishing limited edition prints.

Shyama lives in Brighton and works from her home studio, which over-looks the garden.
